Encouragement & a Friendly Gesture

Today in Walmart I was blessed by a random act of kindness from someone I didn't even know! :) Mom, Dad, and I went to Walmart to get our normal groceries this evening, and when we were checking out, I went in the Arcade room with Dad (While Mom was checking stuff out for me for my birthday ;). Dad and I were playing the Crane Machine, trying to get a Teddy Bear. I almost had it, but it fell before it was dropped into the hole. There was another girl there too, she was a brunette and looked to be about 11 or 12. She kind of glanced over at us, but I didn't really think much about it. I went back over to the check out line, and we headed for the door. The girl that was in the Arcade room stopped me and handed me the bear I was trying to get and said, "Here you go. I know you wanted it." I was so caught off guard and was so happy! I didn't really know what to say so this is what basically came out, "Awwww! Thank you! O my gosh! That's so sweet! Thank you so much!" I thought that was so sweet!! :D And because it was so sweet, I named this little fella...

Mr.Sweet! :)

It made me feel so happy! It made me want to do things for other people, so I'm encouraging myself as much as you to just do little friendly gestures, they'll go a looooong way. :)

Hi!

Hey, guys! :)

I know it's been forever since I've made a post, but I'm working on one. :) It's been super busy for me lately with school, church, and other little trips (included in my next post ;) But I just wanted to let you know I'm still here. I haven't died or anything :) And I hope I haven't offended any of you guys because I haven't been leaving comments on your blogs, but you guys are still on my mind. :)

My cellphone!! :D

So, today I got my very first CELL PHONE!!!!!!! :D
I'm so excited! :D It's just a simple tracfone, but it's still a cell phone! :D My parents said that now that I'm 13, I should get one. Plus I'll be going away next weekend for something with my church, and I'll need one. And lately there's been times I've needed one, so yeah :)

Our Chubby Friend

So the other day, I looked out my front door and saw a very chubby birdie on the sidewalk. Of course, I just had to get a picture of its largeness. :)

He looks like he swallowed a golf ball! Lol

She's OK!

Hey, guys! :)

I wanna thank you guys for all the prayers. Lila's grandma came through surgery fine! :)

She's in the hospital recovering right now. My cousin told me that it started about 7 am and ended about 1 pm yesterday. The doctors said that it really couldn't have gone much better! God definitely kept her safe and guided the doctors! :)

Even though the surgery is over, she's probably still in a lot of pain, and won't be able to do much for a while. So please just keep her in your prayers! Thank you! :)

Prayer Request

Hi, guys! Will you please pray for my cousin, Lila's grandma? She's having an open heart surgery today. My family and I are really worried about it.

Here is the e-mail my cousin Lila sent me last night...

Hey. I was just wanting to let you know that my grandma is having a major surgery tomorrow. It is an open heart surgery and the surgery its self will take at least 5 hours! There are many risks and everyone is nervous and praying for her. The reason for the surgery is she has an aneurysm. It is in one of her heart valves. They are going to remove the valve and replace it with a pig valve. (Apparently pigs have the same size heart as humans.) She will be in the hospital for I think about a week or so until she is allowed to go home. (If everything goes smoothly) She will not be able to do anything for at least a month, including driving, cooking, and for a little while, standing and walking. I am really worried, along with the rest of my family. Every night in my prayers I ask God for a successful surgery and a successful recovery. I pray that nothing will go wrong and that she will feel ok by Christmas. Please pray for my grandma! She needs all the prayers she can get.

Just a glimpse of how Halloween first began -

Halloween was first established by the Celts, people from Ireland and Britain. They decided to have a festival on October 31st, but it was entirely different from the Halloween we know today.

Celts

The Celts and their priests, the Druids, celebrated Samhain, a festival that marked the eve of the Celtic New Year, which began November 1st. They thought that during Samhain the wall separating the dead from the living was at it's thinnest, and that the evening of October 31st, evil spirits and souls of the dead would come through that "wall" where they would visit their used-to-be homes. They believed the souls and spirits would hurt the living, kill crops, steal babies, and kill live stock.

They believed that on this night, they would be able to communicate to the spirits. The Devil would usually be feared, but on this night, he seemed to be welcomed.


Druids

Druids were charged with appeasing the goblins and preventing harm to people. Huge Samhain bonfires were set to guide the spirits. Sacrifices - sometimes even human - were performed to assure a good year.

It's believed that, like many pagan cultures around the world, the Celts left food out for the spirits, hoping that a "treat" would prevent an evil "trick".

Hundreds of years later, the descendants of the Celts continued to observe the Samhain festival and would dress up as evil spirits going from house to house demanding food in exchange for the spirits leaving the house and the people there unharmed. Some carved demon faces in hollow turnips and lit them with candles.

When Christianity began to spread through Europe in the third and fourth centuries, the pagan temples were torn down, but the pagan worship never completely disappeared, and the Samhain festival continued to be celebrated.

Belief in spirits may have gone down, but the festival was still being celebrated - especially by children. Mostly in Ireland, children dressed as spirits going from house to house demanding a treat if they didn't get a treat they would perform a trick. Which is how the name "trick-or-treat" began.

In the 700s Churches decided to combat this festival by replacing it with a celebration of the Lord of Life - Jesus. Instead of honoring evil spirits, the church chose to honor the saints - or hallowed ones - who had lived godly lives. So November 1st, the day after Halloween, was All Saints Day. But, the pagan festival still continued.


Today, Halloween is much different. We've modernized it to pretty much a night for children to get some candy and have fun, but, still, in some areas, witchcraft and sorcery are still practiced. But, to children, it's simply just a fun night.

To some Christians, they may think it's bad to celebrate Halloween, and to some extent, I agree. We can still do some things, but we just have to remember how it started. :)

World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday in the month of October every year. The idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. Harvey Ball is known to have created the Smiley Face in 1963. The World's first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since.

After Harvey died in 2001, the "Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation" was created to honor his name and memory. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is, "improving this world, one smile at a time". The Foundation continues as the official sponsor of World Smile Day each year.

The message of the World Smile Day 2010 is "Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile"

My trip to the Arlington National Cemetery

My teacher recently lost her husband. Her husband was in the navy, so she decided to bury him there.

I took many pictures on the way there, the cemetery, the Pentagon, and the Washington Monument.

On our way out, we got to see another funeral for, apparently, a high-ranking officer pass by carrying the casket....

This is the horse with no rider. If you look closely, you can see boots in the stirrups, but they're backward. This represents the soldier no longer in action.

Sunday's little trip.

On Sunday, Mom, Dad, Lilly and I went down to the river again to get some fresh air and just take a little walk and since they allowed dogs, we took Lilly, too! :)

My Camping Trip

Now, I told you I'd post about my camping trip once things settled down. It's been settled down for quite a while now, so I'm going to post about it now.

Isn't it just beautiful?! I loved sitting around the camp fire with all my friends. That was such a fun night! :)

Friday, August 20, we went floating down the Shenandoah river on our tubes. It was so much fun!
I would have taken some pictures, but my camera wasn't water-proof and there was no place to keep my camera so I didn't bring it. I was going to get the pictures from one of my friends that had a water-proof camera, but apparently she forgot because she never gave them to me.

The camping trip was so much fun! I'll never forget it!!! :)

Lilly's Adoption Anniversary!!!

Guess what! It's Lilly's adoption anniversary! We've now had her for one year exactly. Let me tell you the history of how we got her.

Before we got Lilly we had a dog named Chelsea. Here's a picture of Chelsea and Precious at our old house...
She was a Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel mix. We had her about twelve years and she was a really good dog. She was very sweet and gentle with me when I was really young. She loved to travel and was an all around good dog.

When she was about ten, she started to lose her hearing and it went down hill from there - she started to lose her sight and it became very hard for her to just walk. Because she was just struggling to survive, we thought it was best to just put her to sleep so she could enjoy her life in Heaven.

Sadly, in June 2007 we put her to sleep. Sometimes, I still talk to her hoping she hears me in Heaven, hoping she understands me, hoping she knew I loved her very much. There was no other dog like Chelsea.

I begged and begged for another dog after she died, but my parents said they weren't ready for another pet.

Two years of begging finally paid off, Friday, August 21, 2009, we got Lilly.


Now here's how we adopted her...

After my grandma had adopted a new dog, I wanted a dog more than ever. I asked my mom while we were seeing my grandma's new dog if we could get one. She said that after we got back home from my grandma's house she'd see about it. I was like "Yes!!!"

When we got home, we looked at different web sites for different animal shelters around our house and we looked at pictures of a few different dogs on the sites as well. Mom liked this one dog named Brandy while I liked this other dog named Precious, but we liked a different dog when we got down to the shelter. ;)

Finally, Friday, August 21, 2009, we went down to the nearest animal shelter from our house.

We went inside to the dog section and looked at all the dogs - little ones, big ones, and our soon-to-be dog.

Precious, the dog I thought I liked was so yappy and had such a high-pitched bark. Mom said she didn't want a dog who barked all the time and had such an annoying bark, so we didn't bring her out.

Brandy was Lilly's sister, so we brought Lilly and Brandy out of their cage and took them outside to get to know them.

Brandy was sweet, but bullied her sister, Lilly. She was more shy and she didn't seem to be the dog for us. While Lilly blossomed and was so sweet and cute. We all seemed to take a liking to her so we decided on Lilly.

We filled out the paper work and paid them only $20 for her.

Lilly's first name was actually Bernard. Who would name a girl dog Bernard?! I thought the name Lilly fit her well and since Mom and Dad liked the name as well, she was forever more named Lilly.

Anyway, we brought her home with us and fed and watered her.

As soon as Oreo saw her, his fur stood straight up, he hissed, and took off as if he was running for his life. While Precious, although not wanting another pest, didn't seem to be bothered by her.

We bathed her then loved on her for the rest of the day and played with her with her toys.

She seemed really happy and I loved and love her as my own daughter.

This was one of Lilly's first pictures after we brought her home...Because of Brandy, Lilly had scars around her nose from where Brandy would bite at her, but her scars had already healed in that picture.

Lilly also had tapeworms, so that Monday we took her down to the vet and got her all fixed up and the veterinarian said he could tell I was an animal person. :) After she was fixed up, she blossomed into a beautiful Lilly!!! ;)

After a few mishaps of getting her house-trained and a few chewed up things and a few holes she dug, she was our dog and we all loved her and is ours forever! :)

So that's Lilly's history - how we decided to get her, how we got her, and how she became our dog.
